If you need a bus-powered portable drive, the My Passport is the way to go. Write performance varies from "quite disappointing" to "is this drive broken?" (I'd argue that DM-SMR means that yes, the drive is broken.) SMR has specialised uses in datahoarder and enterprise settings, but the consumer-grade implementation is pretty bad. TL DR: save up for an 8TB MyBook unless you don't have space for it.įirstly, both of those have SMR drives in them.

Just make sure to tag the post with the flair and give a little background info/context. On Fridays we'll allow posts that don't normally fit in the usual data-hoarding theme, including posts that would usually be removed by rule 4: “No memes or 'look at this '”

No memes or 'look at this old storage medium/ connection speed/purchase' (except on Free Post Fridays).Search the Internet, this subreddit and our wiki before posting. And we're trying really hard not to forget.ģ.3v Pin Reset Directions :D / Alt Imgur link Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data - legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. I would like to recover them as much as I can without sending it to a lab.We are digital librarians. The data inside the failing drive is not super important but its contains 10 years worth of my history from middle school.I will be using My Book 4TB external Drive for any cloning of my Failing My passport 4TB.Is it okay to perform cloning through usb 3.0 connection (Both of my external hard drive use USB 3.0 cable to transfer data)? What is the best move from now on for me? ddrescue or find alternative ways? Is ddrescue my only option without going to recovery lab or pay $$$ recovery software?

Even I follow how to setup ddrescue I have no idea how to set up the most efficient code? to clone my drive either. I heard ddrescue might be a good option for me to recover something out of my failing drive and before RMA it.

The result itself looks quite incomplete too as the drive was supposed to be 90% or 85% (before it went RAW) full but it scanned up to 2.8ish TB. However, the result bombed my head with frustration as the error and pending rate doubled.

I ran HD Tune error scan using HD Tune Pro as I don't know the current situation of my drive. I remembered I had a failing drive rotting in my cabinet and as I re-attempted to fix my drive today something bad happened. I was quite pissed off and didn't have any free time left so I stopped my investigation and just left my drive in a cabinet. I also tried deep scan using R-Studio demo but it got stuck at 80% and it said something that it can no longer be processed due to bad sectors. I ran R-studio, easeus, testdisk, and chkdsk and at the time it seemed like most of the files are inside waiting to be recovered. Fortunately, my computer still recognizes the External HDD but can't access it normally. I accidentally disconnected my MY Passport cable from PC (The cable got looped around somehow to my chair armrest and you know I pushed the chair outward unknowingly) while transferring years' worth of files (photos, documents, videos, etc) and my external drive went to RAW Status afterward.
